It is DH and my 40th bday in july and aug and we wish to combine a house warming with that...can anybody help with ideas please????
Im prob thinking a BBQ here at home with friends from here and away. My dilemma is the ones that come from away need to find accomodation and then buy a gift (if they wish, we arent too fussed about gifts but if any one wanted to then vouchers would be most welcome) would this be tacky to write on the invite.
I dont want people to go to too much expense esp ones travelling. Unfortunately there isnt enough room here for all of them....although some room can be swung for 4 couples to sleep here and we can pop the kids in big tents under the big shed...would that be ok do you think.....
For the local guys i was thinking of asking them to bring a plate......maybe some to bring savoury and some to bring sweets?? Can anyone else shed some more light or give me some more ideas,,,,and would these options be okay????

I love to entertain and over the years we have had numerous "big" parties - the last one was to thank everyone who had helped with the rennovations to our home and to celebrate that we had finally finished!!! We had about 60 - 70 people ( including kids ) and as we lived in a semi rural area, many stayed including all our family from out of town so ... some hints for you.
1. Its not tacky to ask for vouchers, especially if done with a nice little poem and if you can be specific about the vouchers that makes it easier. So if you and your DH want to expand your music collection or do some landscaping or redecorating include that. Make a bit of a joke of it i.e. "Your prence to celebrate our fortieth is more than enought, But should you wish to give a gift - please don't get in a huff, If we ask for something that we really need - a voucher from _________ should do the deed" or someting along those lines.
2. Food - BBQ's are great and easy. Pre prep makes the night so much more enjoyable for the hosts, otherwise you become a slave to the bbq and kitchen. Marinated Chicken nibblets from your supermarket Deli or Lennards are great done in the oven. Just buy those aluminium disposable baking/bbq trays and fill them up with a couple of kilos and bake them in the oven before hand. Cover with al foil and keep warm. Everyone loves them and they are a very filling addition. Also this way you have more room on the BBQ! plate for the snags!
3. Accommodation: I am not sure about your area, but here in North Queensland we have several caravan hire places. For about $150:00 they will deliver a caravan on a saturday, then pick it up on monday. We opt for the ones with the bunks in it, set it all up with linen and then thats that. Not to expensive and comfortable for some of the older members of the family.
4. Bringing a Plate: If you want to get people to bring a plate desert is a good one, so long as you have a fridge to hold it all in or ask for things that don't need refrigeration. Maybe do a up a menu and only ask your closest friends or family to make a specific item - otherwise you can end up with a lot of vanilla slice and not much else!

That is some great info there...i dont think we can do the caravan thing but as for the voucher hints and nibblies thats great:)
